Do You Know How Much You're Worth?

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

While doing my daily work at home job lead search, I came across an ad on Craigslist.

I know the economy is tough and it's even tougher when you're trying to find employment online. Craigslist is full of scammy posts, but there are also some gemstones sparkling under the sea of rebate processors "jobs". This ad is looking for a blogger to write articles on their jewelry websites.

They require you to write 2 articles per day with a minimum of 500 words for 30 days. After 30 days, you are re-hired and you write 3 articles per week. There are 3 websites you will be writing articles for.

They only pay $5 per article. The math is very simple. Minimum 500 word article=$0.01 per word and anything above 500 words is less than 1 cent. How long does it takes you to write a quality 500 word article? I don't know, but that is dirt cheap. Don't get me wrong. I'm not an expert on how much a writer should be paid, but I know $5 per 500 word article is cheap.

The thing is you can write for Associated Content and get anywhere from $3 - $5 per article with a minimum of 400 words; at least that is what it is the last time I heard. It may have changed.

I understand times are tough and it depends on your home life finances. I'm not telling you to not take writing jobs that pay $5, but don't sell yourself short either.

While some people may also look at the bigger picture and some income is better than no income, I'm going to provide the link where I found it. Please remember I didn't look further into it, I didn't inquire and I don't know if it's legitimate.

Personally, my time is more valuable! Let's say it only takes me 2 hours to write that article and let's remember, a quality one at that. That would boil down to $2.50 per hour? Are you kidding me? I can walk my neighbors dog for 30 minutes and she will give me $10.00 for doing it!

Yeah I know. When you think of it that way it really doesn't justify it. Anyhow, I still think $5 for 500 words is too cheap.

I agree that $5 per article is cheap. The sad thing is that this person will probably gets lot of people who will work for this rate. It surprises me how low some people are willing to work for.

As a freelance writer I can tell you that these kinds of low rates are pretty normal for web content. The problem is that some people will do the work for that pay. And that's the way the market works -- people will be paid exactly what they are willing to accept. I know I lose a lot of business by insisting on a decent rate of pay. But I'm not some kid looking to make some bucks so I can download 10 more songs from iTunes. I'm an educated professional. If they what a professional they'll pay my rate, if they just want words on a page, hire the person willing to work for pennies.

Well, I didn't start out to rant, but there ya go!

Agreed ladies! That is what I hate when someone who is like a professional writer or better than your average writer recommend something like Associate Content. I think that is insulting.
